Tucked into the wooded hills of the Palatinate Forest in south-west Germany, Burg Berwartstein is the kind of castle that fires the imagination. Its origins reach back to 1152, and possibly earlier, and unlike so many of the region's ruins it has survived as a striking, largely intact fortress carved partly into the living rock.
This film is a tour through that long history — the towers, chambers and rock-hewn passages that make Berwartstein feel like stepping straight into the Middle Ages. It's a castle wrapped in legend as well as stone, having passed through the hands of knights and robber-barons over the centuries, and walking its rooms you get a vivid sense of how a medieval stronghold actually worked. The forest setting only adds to the atmosphere.
If you have a soft spot for old castles and the stories trapped in their walls, this one delivers. Press play for the full tour of Burg Berwartstein, and find more of my German history films on my channel.
