Trondheim, Norway's third-largest city and its medieval capital, is the destination of this city drive — and its centrepiece is one of the country's most important buildings, the magnificent Nidaros Cathedral (Nidarosdomen). Built over the burial site of Saint Olav, it's the northernmost medieval cathedral in the world and the historic end point of Norway's pilgrim routes.
The drive was lucky with the weather for its first half, rolling through the city under summer sunshine, before a proper Norwegian downpour rinses the streets for the second part — two faces of the city in a single film. Either way, Trondheim shows its appeal: handsome old timber warehouses along the Nidelva river, lively holiday-season streets full of visitors, and of course the cathedral itself, the unmissable highlight of any trip here.
