Mandal lays claim to being the southernmost town in Norway, tucked into the country's gentle southern coast. It's long been known as a 'white town' for its streets of white-painted wooden houses, and this drive shows them off in a particularly lovely light.
Recorded in December with the temperature well below freezing, the drive catches Mandal under a low, brilliant winter sun that gradually softens into a beautiful sunset. There's a busy, cheerful pre-Christmas atmosphere about the place — people out and about, the white timber facades glowing in the golden light, and that crisp, still quality the cold brings to a southern coastal town. It's a world away from the dramatic fjords up north: gentler, prettier, and full of seasonal charm.
Winter suits the white town beautifully. Press play to drive through Mandal in the December light, and explore more of my southern Norway drives on my channel.
