This drive has a clear destination in its sights: 'Utsikten', the dramatic viewing platform on the Gaularfjellet National Tourist Route in western Norway. Getting there is half the pleasure — the road runs along the fjords, past the Vetlefjord, before climbing the mountain toward the viewpoint.
The Gaularfjellet route is one of Norway's loveliest, following a protected watercourse rich with rivers and waterfalls as it ascends. At the top sits Utsikten — a bold triangular concrete platform perched on the mountain's edge, around 700 metres above the valley, with a sweeping vista over deep canyons and peaks rising to 1,500 metres. The weather on this particular drive was unfortunately on the overcast side rather than the clear summer blue the route is famous for, but even under grey skies the scale of the landscape comes through. Keep an eye out, too — the trip even caught a deer at the roadside.
The journey and the view both earn their billing. Press play to drive up to Gaularfjellet's viewpoint, and find more of my scenic-route drives on my channel.
