The Geirangerfjord is the fjord that launches a thousand postcards — a UNESCO World Heritage site whose sheer green walls, ribbon-thin waterfalls and deep blue water draw cruise ships and travellers from across the globe. This 25-minute film is the drive down to it, in the midst of the summer holiday season.
The secret to this one is timing. By driving in the early hours of the morning, the film mostly avoids the heavy seasonal traffic that clogs these roads later in the day, leaving the long, winding descent toward the fjord almost clear. You pass landmark viewpoints — among them the dramatic Fløydalsjuvet gorge — as the road snakes down through ever-steeper terrain toward the water, the scenery growing more breathtaking with every bend.
Few arrivals anywhere are as spectacular as the drive into Geiranger. Press play to make the descent from the driver's seat, and find more of my classic fjord drives on my channel.
