Norway is full of interesting roads, and this is one of the most characterful: a tight, twisting single-lane ribbon winding between fjord and mountain in the Hardanger region, from Nordrepollen to Austrepollen. As the drive makes plain, only one car fits on the tarmac at a time.
Roads like this are a particular Norwegian pleasure. They cling to the foot of steep mountainsides, curling around every fold in the terrain with the still water of the fjord just beyond the verge. There are blind corners, passing places to watch for, and a slow, deliberate rhythm to the driving that forces you to take it all in. The reward is intimacy — you're right inside the landscape, close enough to touch the rock walls and the ferns at the roadside.
It's a small road that delivers a big sense of place. Press play to thread the twists from the driver's seat, and explore more of my fjord drives on my channel.
