The Helgeland Coast is the longest of Norway's eighteen official Scenic Routes, and it earns the title. Marked on the map as Fv17 but better known as Kystriksveien — the Coastal Highway — it runs for hundreds of kilometres through Nordland, threading islands, fjords and ferry crossings beneath a long line of jagged peaks. This 4K film captures a stretch of it in the early morning hours.
There's a particular magic to this coast at dawn. The drive heads north toward Ureddplassen, one of the route's celebrated rest stops — a striking modern viewpoint built around a memorial to the lost wartime submarine Uredd, and one of the finest places anywhere on the Nordland coast to watch the sea and, in season, the midnight sun. The light is soft, the roads are empty, and the scenery shifts constantly from open water and skerries to mountain backdrops.
This is northern Norway at its most serene. Press play to drive the coast at sunrise, and find more of my Nordland and fjord routes across my channel.
