If you're travelling in Norway, Aurlandsfjellet belongs on the shortlist. Known as the 'Snow Road', this 47-kilometre National Tourist Route climbs from the fjordside village of Aurland up to a bleak mountain plateau at over 1,300 metres before dropping down to Lærdal — and it holds snow along its edges deep into the summer, which is exactly how it earned the name.
This drive crosses the mountain and descends into Aurlandsvangen, and that descent is the showstopper. As the road snakes down toward the fjord, the view that opens up is astonishing — and it's crowned by Stegastein, the award-winning viewpoint where a platform of timber and steel juts thirty metres out into thin air, 650 metres above the Aurlandsfjord. The contrast between the stark, snow-streaked plateau up top and the lush fjord landscape below is what makes this one unforgettable.
A note for planners: the high mountain stretch is seasonal, usually open from around the start of June to mid-October. Press play to drive the Snow Road, and find more of Norway's great mountain routes on my channel.
